Heel Pain
High quality heel care starts at Brighton Road Podiatry.
Many Australians needlessly live with daily heel pain. Heel damage may present as a hot, sharp or throbbing pain in your heel or arch, particularly first thing in the morning. Other pain triggers include exercise, weight gain, flat or highly arched feet and even pregnancy.
Plantar fasciitis
One of the most common causes of heel pain is plantar fasciitis. The plantar fascia, which acts as a shock absorber for your feet, can suffer inflammation, tearing and a thickening of its soft tissues.
Heel spurs
Situated between the plantar fascia and heel bone, a heel spur is a bony growth of calcium deposits. Although the body’s way of trying to heal damage of the Achilles tendon and plantar fascia, over time heel spurs can grow, resulting in sharp pain.
Sever’s Disease
Children can also experience heel pain due to Sever’s disease. The heel’s growth plate can become inflamed and irritated due to growth, poor alignment and flexibility issues. Although often dismissed as ‘growing pains’, this can be a serious and painful problem.
